Dentures

Acrylic dentures are a type of removable partial denture commonly used in dentistry.

1. Composition:

Acrylic dentures consist of two main components:
  • Denture Teeth: These are artificial teeth made from acrylic resin.
  • Acrylic Base Plate: The base plate is also made of acrylic resin and serves as the foundation for attaching the denture teeth.

2. How They Work?

Stability (preventing rocking) and retention (grip) are achieved through three aspects:
  • The denture fits closely against the gums and natural teeth.
  • Wrought metal clasps (retainers) grip the remaining natural teeth.
  • The base plate covers as much of the hard tissue (jawbone, palate, and ridges) as possible.

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective: Acrylic dentures are the cheapest option.
  • Ease of Modification: They are quick and easy to make and can be easily adjusted (add teeth, reline, etc.).
  • Ease of Use: Acrylic dentures are the easiest to take in and out.

Disadvantages

  • Comfort: They are the least comfortable and well-tolerated.
  • Stability: Acrylic dentures are the least stable due to their design.
  • Retention: They offer the least grip (retention) compared to other denture types.
  • Bulkiness: They can be more bulky, especially if replacing multiple teeth.
  • Palate Coverage: If teeth are missing on both sides, the palate needs to be covered, affecting temperature sensation and chewing experience.

Best Situations

  • Frequent adjustments are expected.
  • Used as a training denture before wearing a complete denture.
  • Trauma cases where teeth have been knocked out.
  • Immediate dentures (when a tooth is removed) due to easy relining.
  • As a temporary solution before more extensive treatment.
