Zirconia

Zirconia

Dental zirconia is a material used in restorative dentistry.

Composition

  • Dental zirconia is zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), which is a crystalline oxide of metallic zirconium.
  • Unlike traditional metal crowns (such as gold or silver) or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, zirconia restorations are considered ceramic.

Appearance

Zirconia has gained popularity due to its impressive properties:
  • Strength: It’s exceptionally strong, making it suitable for dental crowns, bridges, implants, and veneers.
  • Biocompatibility: Zirconia is less likely to provoke an immune response or inflammation.

Strength and Biocompatibility

  • However, there’s a trade-off: Zirconia crowns can appear opaque, especially monolithic zirconia crowns.
  • This opacity may make them look less natural, particularly for front teeth.
  • For back teeth, where strength matters most, zirconia is an excellent choice.
