Dental Implant
Dental implants are a remarkable solution for replacing missing teeth.
1. What Are Dental Implants?
- A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal.
- It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a natural tooth.
- An artificial replacement tooth (such as a crown) is then attached to the implant.
- Dental implants look and function like natural teeth.
2. Who Can Get Dental Implants?
- If you are in good general health, have healthy gums, and have enough bone in your jaw, dental implants might be suitable for you.
- If your jawbone has shrunk or hasn’t developed normally, a bone graft can be done to build up the bone.
- Specialists who place implants include periodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons (oral surgeons), and prosthodontists (who place crowns, bridges, and dentures on implants).
3. How Dental Implants Are Done:
- First Stage:
- Your dentist or specialist places the dental implant into your jawbone beneath the gum tissue.
- The gum tissue is stitched back into place.
- Over several months, the implant bonds with the bone.
- Second Stage:
- The abutment connects the replacement tooth to the implant.
- The gum tissue is stitched back into place.
- In some cases, both stages may be done in a single procedure.
- Artificial Replacement Tooth:
- Your dentist or specialist creates an artificial tooth and attaches it to the abutment.
- Properly fitting the replacement tooth may require several appointments.
- Replacing Several Teeth:
- For multiple missing teeth, a fixed bridge can be anchored to dental implants.
- The bridge spans the gap left by missing teeth and is secured by implants on each side.
